Determining Sleep Apnea

Most of us are ashamed of snoring. However, it also holds the key to our health, in that it can determine if we suffer from a condition called sleep apnea, which in turn considerably increases the chances of a heart attack. A pause in snoring can mean our body has an episode (called an apnea) when one or more breaths are skipped as we sleep. In other words, we stop breathing. Quite understandably, this can have disastrous consequences on our health, increasing the risk of having a heart attack during the night as well. One minute of our partner’s time is all it takes to determine if there is anything to worry about.

Why not ask your ask your bed buddy to stay up until you’ve passed out. If he hears a pause between snores that lasts up to 30 seconds and ends with a snort or a gasp for air, he/she may have sleep apnea. Breathless sleep forces your heart to work harder; one study found that having apnea increases your risk of having a heart attack or dying by 30 percent. If you’ve got a delay, see your doctors immediately.

In fact this little exercise should not take up more than a minute of your time, while also being potentially very useful in determining whether you too suffer from the condition. What’s best about this exercise, it is being said, is that you get to sleep through it, while your partner watches over you. Should the delay in breathing and pause in snoring appear, then it’s high time you saw a doctor about it, it is further advised.

Fastest Way to Shape that tummy!

Here is the simple way to a toned your tummy: 10 minutes a day doing bicycle crunches.

How do you do the bicycle crunch?
It’s quite straightforward, really: lie on the floor (on a mat or blanket) with your face up, hands behind your head and elbows pointing outwards. Lift your shoulder blades and right leg at about 5 – 6 inches from the floor, then bring your right knee upwards towards the chest, twisting your torso so that the knee lightly touches your left elbow. Then switch sides without lowering your shoulders and legs completely to the floor.

It has been said that the bicycle crunch is to be the most effective way to bring our abdomens in shape, mainly because it keeps the body moving constantly, with the direct result that the muscles never rest completely. Don’t overdo it, though: if you’re a beginner to the move, start with two sets of 12 repetitions, then rest and do two more sets. Coupled with 20 minutes of jogging every other day, plenty of fluids and a healthy diet, the bicycle crunch will help you lose weight and shape your abdomen in no time.

I need to do this too;)

Fire Prevention

Since it’s a fire prevention month, here are some steps on how to prevent one. These are for all of us! Specially for me since I run a home;)

  • Use only UL-listed (Underwriter’s Laboratory) or FM (Factory Mutual) approved appliances and tools.
  • Check regularly for frayed or worn power cords or plugs, and replace them immediately.
  • Don’t operate appliances, switches or outlets with wet hands.
  • Never plug in more appliances than a socket is designed to handle.
  • Don’t store flammable items over the stove.
  • Turn pot handles inward so children can’t pull them down.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on a wall nearby the stove.
  • Keep areas around stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers clean to prevent dust particles from igniting.
  • Keep trash and other items away from the furnace or water heater, preferably stored in sealed containers.
  • Check heating equipment annually.
  • Store gasoline and other flammables in tight metal containers, away from the house - never near heating equipment or a pilot light.

Have a great day!
